Some of the ideas thrown to the class was to compile it by material form, to categorize it daily or to identify it through the space we are in when the waste was produced. This week we document the waste that we produced in the form of a postcard, inspired by dear-data by Georgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec. I plan to approach this project hands-on to create a dictionary using illustrations and fabric materials that could help viewers understand and appreciate this art form better. But behind the colorful patterns and intricate motifs on the fabric, what does it truly depict? This project aims to explore the fabric world of batik with the guide of the list of words listed below. I hope this dictionary project could help to guide me to further expand on this project as I try to create this encyclopedia of batik.īatik have been used commonly by the Peranakans and the Malay community for various purpose such as a festive attire, ceremonial and ritual functions and also as a form of cultural identity. Some of the questions are the techniques used to create it, the symbolism and significance of the patterns and also the history and its origin. As I grow up in an area in the east near katong where the use of batik is prominent, like the old and now demolished Malay Village, I am somehow familiar with the patterns and motifs, but I am not sure of the meaning behind it. Batik have a very strong connection with the local communities like the Peranakans and the Malays. I finally managed to find some time to filter out my initial batch of words to gear it towards my proposed final year project theme, which will revolve around the idea of exploring the art form of batik. The whole wallet will be machine sewn so it should be able to hold up quite nicely.ģ1st March – 5th April 2016: Fabric wallet doneĢnd April – 12th April 2016: Content research/ makingĪuthor Hazmi Hasan Posted on MaCategories Dictionary, Outcome, Process, Reflection, Research Tags batik, cloth, fabric, wallet Leave a comment on project3: dictionary. The exterior fabric will be in a slightly thicker cotton material (off white color) so that it is durable to wear and tear (hope for it to last till end of FYP) while the inside pockets will be in the soft cotton batik to hold the content materials. I want to make my content materials tactile, something that can be felt using a sense of touch and to make something which I can interpret and express freely. The reason why I want it to be in this form is that I want to the dictionary process to be a more hands-on process, rather than sitting on my laptop and creating things digitally. Nicole mentioned the term AlteredArt during our class discussion which I managed to look into the library and loan out to research on the methods of collages. The content of the dictionary will be in bits and pieces of ephemera, and possibly in the form of collages like those made by David Fullarton and Bybun. The good thing about making my own dictionary is to be able to manipulate it and customise it based on my own requirement. I try to include the idea of what I envisioned to be a reliable dictionary by making cooperating the components listed above into the fabric wallet. I planned out the construction to create it in such a way that it is expandable so that it become a form of sketchbook. Different people may have different opinion about the idea of reliability so it is subjective.Īs the theme that I am planning revolve around the idea of batik (based on the previous post), I plan to create a dictionary out of the subject material itself – fabric. I do it by trying to deconstruct the definition of a dictionary and categorize it according to the themes.Īfter I manage to get the key words, I added the definition of what I think makes a good reliable dictionary. I try to approach this project by trying to define what is a dictionary, its purpose and how I interpret what makes a good dictionary.
